Dancing Queen was bought as a foal from Fayre Oaks, to be shown by Rebecca. At her first show she was made Champion at the Severn Valley Foal Show. As a foal she was also 3rd at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, and as a Yearling was 7th at the Royal Welsh. Since then she has been shown fairly successfully, her most notable prize to date being 3rd at the 2011 Royal Welsh Show, in the Junior Mare Class. She has had very promising offspring, including Rotherdale Ewan who as a foal won his class at the Royal Welsh Show (2011). We also have a 4 year old mare out of her, Rotherdale Cariad Bach, currently in foal, who is for sale. Dancing Queen is also in foal to the same stallion, Dillymore Marquis 42226, by Revel South Drift. |

In the summer of 2000 I received a phone call from Robina Mills of The Rookery Stud. Robina had decided to disperse her Section C ponies so that she could concentrate on her mountain ponies. Most had already been sold and one or two older mares put out to pasture. This left one mare which Robina didn't want to sell but wanted to find a home for. We had admired Lady in the past and were persuaded (quite easily) to take her on permanent loan. Lady subsequently produced two fillies for us, Rotherdale Uptown Girl in 2001 (by Merioneth Storm) now at The Popsters Stud, and in 2002 Rotherdale Vanity Fair (by Parvadean Replay). This filly was purchased by The Peasedown Stud as a foal and is being produced by Justin Davies at Popsters. She has already been judged a show champion, with many more to come I'm sure. Lady's 2005 foal Rotherdale Ysabel a bay filly (by Glebedale Reply), was recently sold. Her 2007 filly Rotherdale April Lady by Tyr'eos More Fury will be retained by the stud for the present. Rotherdale April Lady was shown as a 3 year old very successfully, with her most notable prizes being first at the Three Counties and 7th at the Royal Welsh. |

Princess arrived at Rotherdale as a two year old on a crisp sunny November morning after a trip to Abergavenny Market. The rest as they say is history! This wonderful little mare is as quiet as a mouse at home (often being handled by small children) but turns in to a real Welsh Dragon at shows. Many times a Champion, her two greatest achievements are winning the The Lord Arthur Cecil Broodmare Championships at The N.P.S. Show in 1988 and a Gold Medal as Female Champion at The Royal Welsh in 1993 (a show at which she won four times). When she was being shown her foals always ended the season with several first prizes and many went on to win in later years also. Her most famous daughter is undoubtedly Rotherdale Magic Princess, Supreme Champion at The 2002 World Centenary Show. She has three daughters in Denmark. The most famous of them being Carl Trock's Rotherdale Heiress by Gwrthafarn Commander. In 1985 two of her daughters both won their classes at Lampeter. These were Rotherdale Noble Lady a yearling by Gwrthafarn Commander and Rotherdale Magic Princess a two year old filly by Derwen Royal Express. Lady was subsequently bought at the May sale that year by Helen Williams (Seiont) for 3000 gns. We have two daughters in the stud at present Rotherdale Magic Princess of course and Rotherdale Imperial Maid (by Gwrthafarn Commander) who is the Dam of our junior stallion Rotherdale Rhodri. Princess is also the dam of one of our younger stallions Rotherdale Viscount. |
This mare is surely one of the best known Welsh Cobs of modern times. She has been accustomed to being in the limelight right from the start when winning as a foal at the Royal Welsh by the side of her equally illustrious dam, who was Female Champion in the same year. Rotherdale Magic Princess was unbeaten as a foal and as a two year old, and has rarely been placed lower than second. She was Youngstock Champion at The Royal of England as a yearling and as a two year old she stood Supreme Filly Champion at Glanusk and Reserve Youngstock Champion at The Royal Welsh and took Northleach to the cleaners:
First, Three year old filly class.
Youngstock Champion.
Sec D Champion.
Owner Bred D Champion.
Supreme Youngstock Champion.
Supreme In Hand Champion.
Overall Supreme Show Champion.
As a three year old she was Youngstock Champion at The Royal of England for the second time ( and also Reserve Female Champion), Youngstock Champion at The Royal Welsh. She has won as a mare at The Royal Welsh, The Royal of England, Northleach, The N.P.S. and many of the top Agricultural and County Shows in the country.
Princess had an unfortunate start to her breeding career. Uncovered at three, she slipped her foal at five, was barren at six, and lost a lovely full term filly at seven. Finally, at eight years of age, she produced a colt foal by Rotherdale Rhodri, Rotherdale Uncle Joe and as a nine year old, in 2002, a fabulous filly, Rotherdale Viscountess, also by Rhodri. Princess was scanned in foal to Rhodri for 2003, and in June she produced her second filly to Rhodri. Unfortunately this gorgeous black filly had to be put down after an accident in the field left her with a broken leg. Having failed to get Princess in foal after this trauma it was decided to ride her. In September 2003 she made her debut in a novice ridden class at the Autumn Performance Show, where after only three weeks of schooling she finished 7th in a very strong class. Princess was shown twice as a foal, at the Royal Welsh and at the Royal of England, winning both times.
As Princess seems to like to foal late in the year her showing season has been short of late. In 2002 she stood Champion at The N.P.S. Show and Overall Welsh and Mountain & Moorland Champion at Monmouthshire County Show (where her daughter Viscountess also won her class). Her greatest moment came, of course at the "World Centenary Show" celebrating 100 years of The Welsh Pony and Cob Society and held at Builth Wells on The Royal Welsh Showground. It was my birthday during the show, and what better present than to take The Supreme Section D Championship.
In 2005 Princess "flew" at The Royal of England to gain the Section D Supreme Championship for the second time. This year she had her second black colt to R. Rhodri at foot Rotherdale Young Celt.
In 2006 she was shown a handful of times:
Hay-on-Wye Cob Champion & Sup.Welsh Champion
NPS Centenary Show Cob Champion & Sup. M&M Champion
Welsh Championships Res. Rhydspence Champion
United Counties Cob Champion & Sup. Horse Champion
Monmouth County Res. Cob Champion
Her foal for 2006 was Rotherdale Zareena a black filly by R. Rhodri. Zareena was not to be out done by her dam at the NPS Centenary Show and duly one the Supreme M&M foal Championship.

Maid is one of my favourite mares, and the image of her Sire. She was shown very lightly as a youngster, being second at The Royal Welsh as a foal and second at Glanusk as a three year old. Her most notable off spring are the full brothers and sisters Rotherdale Odette (first at Glanusk as a yearling and as a three year old), Rotherdale Rhodri, Rotherdale Snow Queen (shown with great success by The Stepol Stud, Lancs ie Reserve Female Champion at The Royal Welsh 2005) and Rotherdale The Tsar, all being by Laburnum Magic who is by Trevallion Prince Comet out of a Nebo Magic Mare. |
Dulais was bought as a yearling in 1978 at The Llanarth Sales. She was our first Welsh Cob and the start of The Rotherdale Stud. We retained two daughters out of her Rotherdale Dulais by Gwrthafarn Commander and Rotherdale Queen (by Derwen Royal Express). Her first foal, (by Nebo Magic) and born in 1981 , was Rotherdale Actor. This colt was successfully shown as a yearling, being Reserve Cob Champion at The South of England Show. He was then sold and eventually landed in the hands of Katie Harris who produced him under saddle and achieved a fourth overall and Best of Breed in the 1986 N.P.S. M. & M. Working Hunter Pony Championships at Malvern.
Another son Rotherdale Glyndwr, foaled in 1987 (by Gwrthafarn Commander), went on to be an affiliated show jumping pony stallion, spending some time in the yard of Lionel Dunning.
Dulais, herself, was also successfully shown, being a winner both in hand and under saddle.
After a short illness at the beginning of December 2009 Dulais was put to sleep at the age of 32.

Rotherdale Dulais is the second foal, and probably best known daughter of our first foundation mare Gerrig Dulais. She was shown extensively as a youngster and was rarely out of the first three at many of the top shows, including Lampeter, Glanusk, Northleach, The Royal of England and The Royal Welsh.
Her three greatest accolades are having been Youngstock Champion at The Royal Welsh in 1987 and Female Champion and Reserve Supreme at The Royal of England in 1991, she was also a winner at Glanusk as a yearling.
Rotherdale Dulais has one daughter in Denmark (Rotherdale Nerys who was first at The Royal of England in 1997). Her 2002 filly foal Rotherdale Vanessa by (Rotherdale Rhodri) became Supreme Champion at The Cotswold Ass. Foal Show. In 2005 Dulais gave us another black filly Rotherdale Yasmin by (Rotherdale Viscount).
In 2008 Dulais produced a lovely bay filly, Rotherdale Bay Lady, by Rotherdale Yaris.
After taking ill suddenly at the beginning of July, Dulais was put to sleep and laid to rest with her sire and dam. |
